Best Time to Visit Turkmenistan

Travel guide

The best time to visit Turkmenistan is spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November): the weather is mild and comfortable for routes that move between cities and out into the desert. It is also the active tourist season.

Summer suits the Caspian and Avaza, but daytime heat in the lowlands is intense; winter is mild in the cities with cool nights in the desert and mountains. The right month depends on your programme — each scenario below.

Spring: the best all-round season

March–May are considered the most comfortable period for classic routes: the air is already warm, extreme heat is absent, and the desert is accessible for daytime programmes. Nowruz, the spring equinox holiday, falls in late March with a particularly lively atmosphere across the country.

Spring is also the right time for long routes (Ashgabat–Darvaza–Yangykala–Merv): extended transfers are far more pleasant than in the summer peak.

Summer: heat inland, beach season on the sea

In summer, in the lowlands where Ashgabat and most of the routes sit, daytime temperatures can exceed 40 °C. Programmes are built differently: early starts, more time indoors, shortened midday excursions.

The main argument for a summer trip is the Caspian coast and Avaza: beach season and cooler air by the water. Summer is the time for short seaside breaks and combined city-and-sea programmes.

Autumn: comfortable conditions again

September–November bring back mild conditions: September is still warm and pairs well with the coast, October is one of the most comfortable months for walking and excursion days, November is cooler and better for city programmes.

Autumn is also strong for photography trips: light and temperature make long days on the road enjoyable.

Winter: mild cities, cool desert

Winter in Turkmenistan is mild in the lowlands: sunny days in Ashgabat, occasional cool precipitation. Nights in the desert and mountain areas are noticeably colder — winter outings need warm clothing.

The winter format works well for short city trips and journeys without extreme excursions; mountain areas are visited with preparation and according to the weather.

How to choose a month for your programme

A short city break works almost any time of year, except in extreme heat if you dislike it. The classic desert route — spring or autumn. The sea and Avaza — summer. Historic cities and long overland legs — shoulder seasons.

Another factor is schedules and load: on popular dates (holidays, school breaks) flights and hotels fill up first. It pays to fix dates early.

spring (March–May) — the best all-round season
summer — heat in the lowlands, beach season on the Caspian
autumn (September–November) — mild weather, good pace
winter — sunny cities, cool desert nights
late March — Nowruz, the lively national holiday
popular dates — book in advance

Expert comment, GOKSEN Turkmenistan

The universal answer is April or October: route days run in comfortable temperatures, without the summer heat peak or cold desert nights. If the sea is the main goal, shift the trip to summer and build the programme around the coast.

Frequently asked questions

Which month is best for a first trip?

April or October — mild weather and a comfortable pace for the classic route.

Is summer realistic for touring?

Yes, with different logic: early starts, midday indoors and a focus on the coast. For long overland programmes, shoulder season is better.

Is it cold in winter?

Cities are mild and sunny, but desert and mountain nights are cool. Warm clothing is needed, especially for excursion days.

When is the Caspian beach season?

Summer: Avaza and the coast operate as a resort zone through the warm season.

When should I book?

Early — on popular dates and holiday periods flights and hotels fill first. A 1–2 month buffer gives the best choice.
