How Many Days You Need in Turkmenistan
For a first trip to Turkmenistan, 5–7 days is usually enough: Ashgabat, Darvaza, the Karakums and one extra region without rushing. If you have a specific interest — mountains, ancient Merv or the Caspian beach season — the duration is adjusted around it.
Short answer: 2–3 days for the capital alone; 4 days for a themed route such as Koytendag; 6 days for the classic loop; 7 days for the extended route with historic cities; 10 days for a big circle with a relaxed pace.
2–3 days: Ashgabat only
The capital is a destination in itself: the white-marble centre, museums, bazaars, the surroundings. In 2–3 days the schedule is dense but realistic — especially for a transit visit or a quick look before a wider regional trip.
The downside of short stays: the flight eats a large share of the time, so excursion destinations (Darvaza, the Karakums) barely fit into such a tight plan.
6 days: the classic route
Six days is the most common recommendation for a first visit: Ashgabat, Darvaza (the 'Gates of Hell'), Yangykala, Nohur and Kow-Ata — the cave with a lake. The pace is full, but the route has been refined over the years and works.
Ready-made programme: the 6-day tour of Turkmenistan — with all transfers, a guide and bookings.
7 days: Merv and Kunya-Urgench
The seventh day is usually spent on history: Merv (once one of the great cities of the ancient world) and Kunya-Urgench form the western leg that turns the trip into a full journey through the region's past.
Ready-made programme: the 7-day tour of Turkmenistan with Merv, Ashgabat, Darvaza and Kunya-Urgench.
4, 10 and 21 days: themed formats
Four days is a format built around one goal: for example, the Koytendag tour with its dinosaur plateau, or a short Ashgabat–Darvaza escape with two excursion days.
Ten days or more is a big circle: the Karakums get a full desert day, the Caspian coast and Avaza join in, and Koytendag or a second visit to Merv can be added. This format works especially well in summer when the beach part is included.
For a wider regional trip there is the 21-day Five Countries of Central Asia programme, where Turkmenistan occupies its own block.

The optimum for a first trip is 6–7 days: the route keeps its pace and you do not pay for days that pass empty. If the Caspian and Avaza are added — plan 8–10: the sea does not like being rushed.
Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough for Turkmenistan?
Only if the goal is Ashgabat. For Darvaza and the desert you need at least 4–6 days including the flight.
What makes 7 days better than 6?
The historical block is added: Merv and Kunya-Urgench. If ancient cities are not a priority, 6 days is usually enough.
What to add with 10 days?
A full desert day in the Karakums, Avaza and the coast, Koytendag or an extended Ashgabat. In summer, combining desert and sea makes sense.
Can it be done in 2 days?
Formally yes, city-only, but the flight takes most of the trip. We would not recommend that pace for a first visit.
How do I build a day-by-day plan myself?
Start with the trip planner: it helps lay destinations across days. If you prefer — we will assemble the programme for you.
